What is the OIG Information Portal?

The OIG Information Portal is a data visualization tool that allows users to analyze City of Chicago data. Currently, the dashboard contains over 100 ways to visualize city data related to the City’s budget, employees, and police department.

How often are the dashboards updated?

The dashboards are updated daily after midnight, except for the following which are updated by the second week of the month. All the dashboards show the last update in the upper right corner of the dashboard.

How does the OIG access the data used in the OIG Information Portal?

OIG established direct access to several City of Chicago reporting databases. The relevant data in those databases are extracted, cleaned, analyzed, and visualized.

I am having problems with, or am finding it difficult to interpret, the data dashboards. Who should I contact?

A short online tutorial video has been created to assist users to understand how to explore the data dashboards. The glossary of terms will assist users to understand key terms used in the dataset. Subsequent queries can be directed to iginfoportal@igchicago.org.

What timeframe does the data cover?

The timeframe of the data varies. All the dashboards show the beginning date of the data under the title and shows the last update in the upper right corner of the dashboard.

When I first access a dashboard, without selecting anything, what data am I seeing visualized?

The dashboard starts by displaying the data from the beginning date of the data shown under the title through the last update shown in the upper right corner of the dashboard without any filters. Selecting any item(s) that interests you can then filter the data.

I find that some of the figures and tables show “Null”. How should I interpret this?

Null means that the department responsible for the data did not enter the information.

I find that some of the figures and tables show “Unreported” for race and/or gender. How should I interpret this?

Unreported means that race and/or gender were not disclosed by the employee.

I have selected items or “drilled down” into the data. How do I go back or reset?

Data is filtered when an item is selected and unfiltered when the red “X” next to the filter category is selected.
